I deeply respect and honor women who choose to work inside the home full-time to care for their families. We never want to discourage that incredible calling, but we must also ensure that every woman has the freedom to work outside of the home – if they so choose.

Therefore, in order to empower women to reach our full economic potential, we must embrace four fundamental changes that will propel us into the future.

First, as leaders in both business and government, we must pave the way in modernizing the workplace.

While the percentage of working women has dramatically increased, corporate expectations have remained all-too stagnant.

Today, in the United States, women now comprise 47 percent of the workforce.

In the vast majority of American homes with children, all parents work – and in 40 percent of households, women are the primary breadwinners.

Yet, work environments and social institutions still largely operate on a single-earner mindset, in which one parent – traditionally the mother – stays at home to provide full time care.

All too often, our workplace culture has failed to treat women with appropriate respect. This takes many forms, including harassment, which can never be tolerated.

Traditional and rigid corporate culture also fails working mothers – and fathers – who work long and often wildly unpredictable hours and get little time off.

Too many mothers dread telling their boss they must stay home to take care of a sick child – and many must go back to work just weeks after having a new baby – because they can’t afford not to.

Every day, working parents are forced to make hard but unavoidable choices.

The second thing I’ve noticed is that although you know no one is better than you, every other persons is equal to you and deserves to be treated with dignity and respect.

I’ve worked with eight Presidents, hundreds of Senators. I’ve met every major world leader literally in the last 40 years. And I’ve had scores of talented people work for me. And here’s what I’ve observed: Regardless of their academic or social backgrounds, those who had the most success and who were most respected and therefore able to get the most done were the ones who never confused academic credentials and societal sophistication with gravitas and judgment.

Don’t forget about what doesn’t come from this prestigious diploma -- the heart to know what’s meaningful and what’s ephemeral; and the head to know the difference between knowledge and judgment.

But even if you get these things right, I’ve observed that most people who are successful and happy remembered a third thing: Reality has a way of intruding.

I got elected in a very improbable year. Richard Nixon won my state overwhelmingly. George McGovern was at the top of the ticket. I got elected as the second-youngest man in the history of the United States to be elected, the stuff that provides and fuels raw ambition. And if you’re not careful, it fuels a sense of inevitability that seeps in. But be careful. Things can change in a heartbeat. I know. And so do many of your parents.

Six weeks after my election, my whole world was altered forever. While I was in Washington hiring staff, I got a phone call. My wife and three children were Christmas shopping, a tractor trailer broadsided them and killed my wife and killed my daughter. And they weren’t sure that my sons would live.

Many people have gone through things like that. But because I had the incredible good fortune of an extended family, grounded in love and loyalty, imbued with a sense of obligation imparted to each of us, I not only got help. But by focusing on my sons, I found my redemption.

Goodmorning/afternoon,everybody!A famous American poet says , "Life is short, study is long." Everyone should work hard and study well. Never waste any time. Now we are young, we have so many things to do. Youth time is like a happy bird. If it flew away, it would never return. Nothing is more important than time.

Today some students spend too much time enjoying their lives such as eating, clothing, traveling and so on. Others spend too much time reading some useless books. A lot of time has been wasted. They have no idea that waste of time means wasting of one’s life.

While we are young and full of energy, let’s study hard.

My speech is over ! Thank you.

If I win the election as class leader, I will use the exuberant energy, a clear mind to do this work, I will organize a series of activities such as reading, speech, and of course there are many I do not say. I think we should have as a doer, not those beautiful words to describe. If I had lost, that I still have many shortcomings, I will continue to self-improvement.

I should know: In the acting business, you fail all the time.

Early in my career, I auditioned for a part in a Broadway musical. A perfect role for me, I thought—except for the fact that I can’t sing.

So I’m in the wings, about to go on stage but the guy in front of me is singing like Pavarotti and I am just shrinking getting smaller and smaller...

So I come out with my little sheet music and it was “Just My Imagination” by the Temptations, that’s what I came up with.

So I hand it to the accompanist, and she looks at it and looks at me and looks at the director, so I start to sing and they’re not saying anything. I think I must be getting better, so I start getting into it.

But after the first verse, the director cuts me off: “Thank you. Thank you very much, you’ll be hearing from me.”

The next part of the audition is the acting part. I figure, I can’t sing, but I know I can act.

But the guy I was paired with to do the scene couldn’t be more overdramatic and over-the top.

Suffice to say, I didn’t get the part.

But here’s the thing: I didn’t quit. I didn’t fall back.

I walked out of there to prepare for the next audition, and the next audition, and the next one. I prayed and I prayed, but I continued to fail, and I failed, and I failed.

But it didn’t matter. Because you know what? You hang around a barbershop long enough—sooner or later you will get a haircut.

You will catch a break.

Last year I did a play called Fences on Broadway and I won a Tony Award. And I didn’t have to sing for it, by the way.

And here’s the kicker—it was at the Court Theater, the same theater where I failed that first audition 30 years prior.

The point is, every graduate here today has the training and the talent to succeed.

But do you have guts to fail?

Here’s my second point about failure:

If you don’t fail… you’re not even trying.

My wife told me this expression: “To get something you never had, you have to do something you never did.”

Les Brown, a motivational speaker, made an analogy about this.

Imagine you’re on your deathbed—and standing around your bed are the ghosts representing your unfilled potential.

The ghosts of the ideas you never acted on. The ghosts of the talents you didn’t use.

And they’re standing around your bed. Angry. Disappointed. Upset.

“We came to you because you could have brought us to life,” they say. “And now we go to the grave together.”

So I ask you today: How many ghosts are going to be around your bed when your time comes?

You invested a lot in your education. And people invested in you.

And let me tell you, the world needs your talents.

Man, does it ever.

I just got back from four months of filming in South Africa—beautiful country, but there are places with terrible poverty that need help.

And Africa is just the tip of the iceberg.

Sometimes it takes things falling apart, for better things to fall into place. Sometimes it takes the most uncomfortable path, to lead your life to the most beautiful place. Theres gonna be bad days, theres gonna be dark days, but youve gotta embrace it.

Because that pain is what makes you stronger. Failure is what makes you stronger.

You have to accept those down times, because once you realize those down times, are just as much part of life as anything else, youre able to strive again.

Youll never see the purpose of the storm, until you see the growth it produced. Youll never understand why you went through what you went through, until you see the strength, the power, the resilience that it built inside of you. Ask yourself why.

But this why is a better why, "Why am I doing this? Why am I failing? Why am I even getting myself in a situation where I could fail? Because I have a dream. Because I have goals."

For your generation, there’s an incredible amount of pressure on all of you to succeed, particularly now that you have accomplished so much. You’re whole generation faces this pressure. I see it in my grandchildren who are honors students at other Ivy universities right now. You race to do what others think is right in high school. You raced through the bloodsport of college admissions. You raced through Yale for the next big thing. And all along, some of you compare yourself to the success of your peers on Facebook, Instagram, Linked-In, Twitter.

Today, some of you may have found that you slipped into the self-referential bubble that validates certain choices. And the bubble expands once you leave this campus, the pressures and anxiousness, as well -- take this job, make that much money, live in this place, hang out with people like you, take no real risks and have no real impact, while getting paid for the false sense of both.

But resist that temptation to rationalize what others view is the right choice for you -— instead of what you feel in your gut is the right choice —- that’s your North Star. Trust it. Follow it. Youre an incredible group of young women and men. And thats not hyperbole. Youre an incredible group.

Well, good morning, everyone. Hello, WashU, how is everyone doing?

Let me start with the most important words I can say today: Congratulations to the distinguished graduates of the great Class of 20xx.

I’d like to welcome everyone here – and Chancellor Wrighton for extending the invitation. I’ve known the chancellor for more than a decade, and I want to congratulate him for everything he has done to both transform this campus and raise academic standards.

If there are…if there are any older alumni present, be glad you applied back when you did. I can just tell you that certainly I would not have gotten into WashU today. For the record, I was the kind of student who always made the top half of the class possible.

Graduates, it’s a great honor to be your Commencement speaker. I accept the fact that I wasn’t your first choice. But unfortunately, T-Pain couldn’t make it. Mandatory vocal rest, he said. Actually, that’s the same reason I didn’t go out last night and sing karaoke at T’s.

Today’s a beautiful day. But this is St. Louis, and so before leaving my hotel this morning, I also packed a winter parka.

I drove over here, and I was lucky: I found a very convenient parking space – on West Campus – so I took the shuttle over. It was worth it. What an amazing place this is. Where else could I see the bunny? And the DUC.

Still, I was disappointed that, in all my walking around, I did not get to see the school’s most famous icon: Ninja Turtle Backpack Guy. Demetri, way to dance to your own beat.

Good morning,boys and girls!

I’m very glad to stand here and give you a short speech! To begin with ,I want to pop a question .Does everybody dream a good dream last night? Actually ,Today I want to talk about dream with you. Of course, What I want to talk is not a dream you have last night, but a dream about life.

Every one has dreams about life, different dreams at different life stage, and we need dreams to support us. Dreams are like the stars we never reach in the sky,but like most mariners,we can chart our course by them. With the dream,we have a direction, with a direction, we were no longer confused. With the dream, there is hope,With hope, we have the strength to fight.

Life is tough, and there are always ups and downs, maybe we fail in the way to our aims, and we may feel depressed ,whenever at this time, the dream in our heart can always confort us, encourage us ,and support us to move ahead .

So bear in mind your dream and never give up your dream easily. look into the great people’s experiences, you may find the truth that good dream makes a good one, because there is nothing like a dream to create the future and build up our body .

Finally ,I would suggest. Have a dream in mind and keep pursuing on it. Try to use your time sensibly, do what you should do to make your dream come ture. Although it is a hard job to get to the top of your dreaming mountain, but as the saying says, “mountain’s high, but man makes the peak”. As long as we keep, we will finally fullfill it .

"Inspirational speech"

1. Growth takes time. You only want to do is target sights, full of patience, full of indomitable spirit to move forward, and this is our growth process.

2. Way of life of our people, there are two: the first one is like grass alive, you though alive, still growing every year, but you are, after all, is a grass, you absorb the sun and rain, but grow up, people can step you, but it will not be because of your pain and he produces pain, people do not come because you were stepped pity you, because people do not see you! So every one of us should be tree-like growth, even if we do nothing, but as long as you have the seeds of the tree, even if it was the middle of the man stepped on the soil, you are still able to absorb soil nutrients, own growing up, maybe two in three years, you grow up, two decades but eight or ten years, you will be able to grow into towering trees, when you grow into towering trees, the distant place that people will be able to see you come near you, you can giving a green, a cool, can you help others, even if people leave you, a look back, you are still on the horizon a beautiful landscape, tree alive beautiful scenery, dead still is a pillar of the living dead are used, this standard is the standard of life of each and every one of us and grow.

3. Those who want to all of a sudden, the thing dry into the idea, even if he did into this thing, he no foundation tantamount to build a house on the beach, they will definitely collapse, only slowly things step by step as dry as, every step gave himself has laid a solid foundation, each step gave a good explanation, and then again to the next higher go step he is able to make things really do successful .

2. You in the end what is most like what we should do when you decide life doing, you must unswervingly to stay here, Do not change, you can be like a river, flow more broad, but Do not want to go into another river, or into a high mountain.

5. Our future life one of the most important ability, the ability called bite the bullet, and a lot of celebrities will encounter a lot of things you can not stand, but you have to live with, rather than endure can not succeed, and why? Because you do not bite the bullet, you do not have the time, you do not have the space, not toward future space, if you want to last into the future, become stronger and more prosperous, you have to do to give myself enough time and space , turn to our own lives in order to strive for a great goal when you exclude, to have must exclude all trivial interference in your life, so you have to bite the bullet! Personal, you want to have a great development, you have to fight for their own time, to fight for space, fight for the future, and to gain time to fight for space to fight for the future of one of the most important prerequisite is that you have the ideal! But you dare to endure life appear unfair to you, or you think you can not stand the things!

6. I have a metaphor, every river has its own different life curve, the curve of the Yangtze River and the Yellow River is definitely not the same, but every river has its own dream, that is, towards the sea! Therefore, regardless of the Yellow River is how the twists and turns, bypassing the obstacles Yangtze River Shui bend as good as the Yellow River, but she broke through the cliffs, the way is not the same, but to finally come to the sea. When we encounter difficulties, whether it is rush to go around, as long as we could in the past, I hope everyone can make their own life to the dream stream past, the same as the Yangtze and Yellow Rivers flow to the end of their dreams, into a broad ocean, so that their lives become open broadened own career, but not to say that you want the stream will be able to stream past, in fact, there have a spirit, no doubt, this is the water spirit! Our life sometimes sediment, although you can also follow the water with forward flow, but because of your personality defect, in the face of a difficult step backward or timid, you might slowly will be the same as the sediment precipitated down , once you precipitation down, you may no longer need to move forward efforts, but you never see the sun, you precipitate it, above the sediment will continue to suppress you, and finally you will be dark, So I suggest that everyone, regardless of your life is how kind, must have the spirit of water, even if it is contaminated, wash their own strength as water continues to savings, to break through the obstacles, when you find timing not to the thickness of the accumulated, when one day when the time comes, youll be able to gallop into the sea, the achievements of their lives!

7 .Everyone know Western mythology, there is a story called Sisyphus, due Zeus punishment must push down from the foot of a stone pushed to the top of the hill, when the big rock pushed him to the top of the hill, the stone will automatically rolled down to the foot of the mountain, he had to start from scratch to push up, so worried! Little think about our daily life and work is not such a process, and when he pushed the stone, when to treat it as a form of punishment, his mind will be very hard to accept daily with grievances resentment in pushing the stone like many of us work with grievances and resentment at work, your work will always do well, but when he later realized this, and push through the seasons, push lightning weathered, when he pushed to the top of the hill to see higher and more beautiful blue sky, he felt that push the stone is also a beautiful time of life, life in fact has been sublimated. Our lives what passes cost-effective, when we look back we have in the past days, we have some days to make our own was moved to tears, what let you in tears the day, you make some let you feel can not do, but you do things.

8. of my own personal experience is how business is more successful a few key points: the first point, and how, as far as possible, to combine their long-term goals and short-term goals, we must first distinguish what things we want to life doing things, which things are suddenly finish the things we can not dry. China we have a saying hurry slow to do, the more anxious you things, you are done more carefully and more seriously, the more we can do a good job, and the more anxious you do things the faster, but more to do to pieces. I hurry to call it a major event, for example, you want to be a lifetime to master a high level of English, you say three months, learn twelve hours a day, you are absolutely impossible, three months, and you English level will be greatly improved, but three months later, you do not learn that in another three months, forget your English level. The second element is to determine their own life to do, then I think very important is usually to do things when the time plan, a person is very dynamic, and I do more than ten years ago, the New Oriental I feel that the time is not enough, Im too busy hands and feet the air, finally found something to finish, I twenty-four hours to do things, out of things to do with more than a dozen years ago my twenty-four hours running around in circles , is quite different. So why can busy over it, the reason is very simple, because you busy when you know how to plan your time, do remember that, no matter the time, and certainly are able squeezed out, then there is a very important, called the success of the necessary self-restraint, I ski five years ago, just up on the snow to fall on the snow fell, but then I found that it does not work, I have to learn to stop, we know that skiing two parked method of beginner ski toe stop method, but when the ski slope to reach a certain slope, this eight regardless of use, to the two skis side over side stop, so I spent a whole weeks time, I have not practiced skiing, I come with specialized training to stop, stop I found I have done a very good time, I directly carrying snowboard a senior Road, I have a friend, he felt that you can on that I can on his side of the ski trails is hillside, one side is cliffs, the results after him when he could not stop. directly rushed to the cliffs that have passed, rushed past that he is not afraid of you, afraid he began forcibly Niuguo Lai Niuguo Lai a foot Niuguo Lai, the other feet did not Niuguo Lai, results of two feet ripped ligament was completely pulled off at any time, when youre in front of the face of a huge temptation, and any other temptation may arise, if you feel not stop, you do not go chase that thing, because you chase that thing can not stop himself, and finally come a cropper necessarily you!

9. Great and extraordinary difference is that an ordinary person, living a trivial life every day, but he spelled out the trivial, or a bunch of trivial life! The so-called great man, a bunch of trivial things, by a great goal, daily accumulated into a great career!

10. There are two words that I appreciate: Life is a process; career is a result. Everyone live live in every day, if every day you upset you every day all combined, is your life happy, but if you happy every day, in fact, your life is happy Happy! Time I go to the Yellow River, I use mineral water bottles filling a bottle of water, we all know that the Yellow River water is particularly muddy, then I placed on the side of the road, about an hour or so, so I am very surprise, found that three-quarters have become a very clear and a bottle of water, and only a quarter of it is settling down sediment. That if we put a bottle of water to fresh water part of the metaphor of our happiness and joy, and that that mud, muddy sediment precipitation metaphor of our pain, you understand, when you shake it after your life in whole is full of pollution, that is full of all the pain and trouble, but when you calm down, despite the sediment total weight at all did not decrease, but it is deposited in your heart, because your heart is quiet, so we never mix up three-quarters of your life must be happiness and joy. What is the cause of a result, we all know that as one thing, it really is relentless, if New Oriental I do fail, I am absolutely not here today to give you the opportunity to address the reasons because its final results here, so anything as long as you do it, he can not be considered successful, for example, we said Cao Xueqin success, whether socialist or capitalist, would have to admit that Cao Xueqin Chinese history one of the greatest writers, we say that Newton is successful, whatever nation or any people would admit that he is one of the greatest scientists in the world, I consider myself to be successful, unsuccessful New Oriental much not successful how much money I have or how many friends I think I succeeded in that I have a state of mind, I fell in the past more than 10 million times, the future I may also fall thousands of times, but Im still able to get up. For how you do things, things like, the eyes of people in society, it is the only standard of success!

11. I want to say that human life is very flat road, by you absolutely go finish this world only you together with others, for the same goal, with things, in order to put the thing made very limited power of one person, but a group of people is unlimited power, when five fingers outstretched, five fingers, but when you put five fingers hold up, it is a fist!

There really is no time to waste. The problems driven by climate change are getting worse – and that’s something you’ve seen right here during your lifetime.

The recent Mississippi River floods have affected life in St. Louis and they have devastated farmers across the Midwest. Those types of natural disasters will continue to get more severe with climate change, according to the best scientific data.

The trouble is too many politicians aren’t interested in hard science. They’re only interested in political science and winning their next election. So they ignore the data, they try to cut funding for climate research – because they know it will undermine their political argument. Sometimes they even try to block public employees from uttering the words – climate change.

You can’t make this stuff up. You just have to wonder, what are they trying to hide? And the only conclusion I have drawn is that they’re either hiding their own ignorance or their own bad faith.

Either way, when government tries to gag scientists and censor our conclusions, watch out and speak up.

I’m so happy to be here on your day and all of your day. It’s good to know there’s one Yalie who is happy I’m being here -- be here, at least one. (Laughter.) On “Overheard at Yale,” on the Facebook page, one student reported another student saying: I had a dream that I was Vice President and was with the President, and we did the disco funk dance to convince the Congress to restart the government. (Laughter.)

Another student commented, Y’all know Biden would be hilarious, get funky. (Laughter.)

Well, my granddaughter, Finnegan Biden, whose dad went here, is with me today. When she saw that on the speech, I was on the plane, Air Force Two coming up, she said, Pop, it would take a lot more than you and the President doing the disco funk dance. The Tea Party doesnt even know what it is. (Laughter.)

Look, I dont know about that. But I’m just glad there’s someone -- just someone -- who dreams of being Vice President. (Laughter and applause.) Just somebody. I never had that dream. (Laughter.) For the press out there, thats a joke.

Of course, some people say defending the indefensible is just politics as usual, but I don’t accept that – and I hope you won’t, either.

When extreme partisanship replaces reason, logic, facts and data, the country suffers – and special interests win. I’ve seen it time and time again, on issue after issue: gun violence, education, public health, and even one that threatens life as we know it: climate change.

Yesterday, I stood with WashU’s next chancellor, Andrew Martin, and the president of Ohio State University to announce that Bloomberg Philanthropies will help sponsor the first-ever climate summit of Midwestern universities next year right here on this campus.

We were joined by your mayor here, Lyda Krewson, because St. Louis, and WashU, has never…has always been a real leader on climate change.

Last year, this city was one of the winners of a climate competition my foundation ran. And we are now providing about $2.5 million of resources to help St. Louis increase energy efficiency and expand solar power – a goal that WashU is helping the city to achieve. Thank you very much.

The free press is labeled the enemy of the people, the irrefutable science underlining our understanding of climate change is portrayed as a fabrication propagated for political agenda, and universities are increasingly cast as incubator of intolerance, and enemies of free expression, a sensationalist charge disproved by consistent presence on university campuses including Columbia of controversial speakers from both the left and the right. Some might argue that these verbal attacks on the press and universities as well on all. The other daily falsehoods that accompany them are harmless, only a superficial attack without lasting consequences. For us, however, in the university, where truth is everything, we cannot accept that characterization. It cuts to our core.

So what are to do? Fortunately, there is an experience to guide us in our response and nowhere is that experience more resonant than at Columbia. Precisely 100 years ago in 1919 during the chaotic and repressive post-world war I era. I referenced earlier, a moment of a civil peril laid bare a fight between imagination and ignorance. The fight was fierce and provoked two distinct responses, each of them worthy of special note, celebration, and emulation today.

First, the United States Supreme Court took three cases, including that involving presidential hopeful Eugene Debbs and began interpreting the words Congress shall make no law abridging the freedom of speech or of the press. It took the court and the nation another 50 years to get it right, with the special help of the civil rights and the women’s movement, but finally, we did… finally, we did and when it all came together, the United States had created the greatest shield for freedom of the thought and of expression of any nation history.

I’ve been lucky. And my wish for all of you is that not only tomorrow, but 20 and 40 and 50 years from now, you’ve found that sweet spot, that thing that allows you to get up in the morning, put both feet on the floor, go out and pursue what you love, and think it still matters.

Some of you will go to Silicon Valley and make great contributions to empower individuals and societies and maybe even design a life-changing app, like how to unsubscribe to Obama for America email list -- (laughter) -- the biggest “pan-list” of all times.

Some of you will go to Wall Street and big Wall Street law firms, government and activism, Peace Corps, Teach for America. You’ll become doctors, researchers, journalists, artists, actors, musicians. Two of you -— one of whom was one of my former interns in the White House, Sam Cohen, and Andrew Heymann —- will be commissioned in the United States Navy. Congratulations, gentlemen. Were proud of you. (Applause.)

But all of you have one thing in common you will all seek to find that sweet spot that satisfies your ambition and success and happiness.

I’ve met an awful lot of people in my career. And I’ve noticed one thing, those who are the most successful and the happiest -- whether they’re working on Wall Street or Main Street, as a doctor or nurse, or as a lawyer, or a social worker, I’ve made certain basic observation about the ones who from my observation wherever they were in the world were able to find that sweet spot between success and happiness. Those who balance life and career, who find purpose and fulfillment, and where ambition leads them.
