我校八年级英语风采展示比赛活动，历时一个多月，圆满完成三个阶段的活动任务和目标，取得了预想的活动效果。首先，我代表八年级师生向在比赛中取得优异成绩的班级、学习小组、同学表示衷心的祝贺!

为了激发同学们学习英语的兴趣，提高同学们学习英语的积极性,提高英语综合应用能力和学习小组展示水平，提升小组凝聚力，丰富和活跃校园文化生活，我校八年级部组织策划了这次各班学习小组“英语风采”展示比赛活动。本次活动分四个阶段进行。

第一阶段：小组训练阶段(5月12日——5月底)。第二阶段：班内演出、评选阶段。(第14周)前一周，各班在班内进行了公演和评选，评选出了优秀小组，代表班级参加全年级的展示比赛。

第三阶段：演出主持人评选阶段(第13周)。

第四阶段：全年级公开演出阶段(也就是今天的展示比赛)。 特别是在小组训练阶段，各班以小组为单位准备节目。各班学习小组组长组织本组成员进行排练、训练。全年级同学积极参与，表现出很高的热情，课外活动时间，办公室、操场、宿舍区、花园里，校园处处有排练训练的同学、指导教师的身影。很多教师下班后不回家，对任教班级的各个小组一次精心辅导，很多其他学科教师为这次活动提出了建议意见，在这里，我代表八年级师生向参与指导的老师和班主任老师以及为这次展示比赛活动出计献策的老师们表示衷心的感谢。

As we all know, money can buy all the goods in our life, no matter how huge it is. A spaceship, for example, if you really feel your bank account can afford it.

We must not, apologize for this but relish and champion it and find our own new contributions to this end. Yet at the same time, our world demands that we be more permeable as a university, more blended with life beyond the academy. The most striking physical manifestation of Columbia’s modern engagement with the larger world will our new Manhattanville campus, which is intentionally designed to be open and welcoming to the world.

Indeed, all of us feel the moral imperative to be working on solutions to global problems that frequently appeal to be beyond the grasp of sovereign governments and our own mostly diminished international organization.

Moreover to spend any time at Columbia is to be confronted with your sense of duty and purpose, along with your well-earned belief in your ability to make a difference.

This push and pull of truth-speaking and meaningful action is a tension endemic to higher education today and to the lives, you will live. The twin goals of serving society and the world while protecting our distinctive intellectual outlook are something we have always felt, but its centrality to our enterprise has only intensified over time. Happily, as we confront this dual agenda, there is a disheartening and indisputable reality. No group of graduates could be better equipped to navigate this precarious path than you.After all, you chose to attend Columbia at the beginning of a journey that one finds conclusion today and you elected to become part of a university that for 265 years has been distinctively defined by its commitment to addressing the insistent problems in the present.

Passions are stoked, and the assault on truth begins. The necessary predicate for discrediting your opposition and for creating supporters. It usually starts with attacks on the press and journalists. And then it moves to universities and students and professors.

Since truth is the real enemy, and whoever pursuit it must be declared the enemy. Evidence of nation after nation making this distressing turn is now all around us. We must be careful not to underestimate the negative consequences to our own values caused by this pervasive form of censorship and suppression.

Given the ever-increasing integration of peoples of the world. Through the powerful forces of economic activity, communication, and movements across borders, we depend on professors, students, and ideas flowing freely through our community of institutions. We may therefore sometimes look at these acts of intolerance abroad as matters of here foreign consequence, but they almost also have much more direct and immediate consequences for our own values.

The most recent case that vividly makes this point is the hideous torture and murder of Khashoggi. A Saudi national and unsparing critic of that regime. A violation of international law and human rights, yes, it certainly appears so. But it was potentially a violation of American law, and the interests protected by those laws for Khashoggi was a communist with the Washington post and a legal resident of the United States. With two children of his four who are U.S. citizens. As such he was protected by the first amendment for the things he said and for which he was killed. This is a crime under American laws against torture and violation of civil rights, for which there is extraterritorial jurisdiction to pursue prosecution. Though it is deplorable that no action has been taken in this country to bring this killer to justice and to vindicate U.S. interests. A precedent that should concern us all.

Of course, there is no shortage of attacks on truth and on truth seekers right here at home. The undermining of honest discourse has occurred so far not through official acts of censorship, but more indirectly, if not very subtlety, the means of suppression.

The good news is the way to clean up the pollution can be found in [the] three words written on the cover of your diploma. It’s the motto of this great university: ‘Per Veritatem Vis’ (strength through truth). And it’s a motto that fits perfectly with a university named for George Washington.

In 1794, during President Washington’s second term, there was a faction ginning up support for secession. Washington recognized the threat it was…threat it posed – and he was confident that it would not succeed. He wrote in a letter, and I quote, ‘It is not difficult by concealment of some facts, and exaggeration of others to bias a well-meaning mind, at least for a while.’

But, he continued, ‘Truth will ultimately prevail where pains is taken to bring it to light.’

Now, I know the phrase ‘pains is taken’ probably just horrified every English major here. As kids, we were taught that Washington never told a lie, but they never told us he had trouble with subject-verb agreements.

For your generation, there’s an incredible amount of pressure on all of you to succeed, particularly now that you have accomplished so much. You’re whole generation faces this pressure. I see it in my grandchildren who are honors students at other Ivy universities right now. You race to do what others think is right in high school. You raced through the bloodsport of college admissions. You raced through Yale for the next big thing. And all along, some of you compare yourself to the success of your peers on Facebook, Instagram, Linked-In, Twitter.

Today, some of you may have found that you slipped into the self-referential bubble that validates certain choices. And the bubble expands once you leave this campus, the pressures and anxiousness, as well -- take this job, make that much money, live in this place, hang out with people like you, take no real risks and have no real impact, while getting paid for the false sense of both.

But resist that temptation to rationalize what others view is the right choice for you -— instead of what you feel in your gut is the right choice —- that’s your North Star. Trust it. Follow it. Youre an incredible group of young women and men. And thats not hyperbole. Youre an incredible group.

The free press is labeled the enemy of the people, the irrefutable science underlining our understanding of climate change is portrayed as a fabrication propagated for political agenda, and universities are increasingly cast as incubator of intolerance, and enemies of free expression, a sensationalist charge disproved by consistent presence on university campuses including Columbia of controversial speakers from both the left and the right. Some might argue that these verbal attacks on the press and universities as well on all. The other daily falsehoods that accompany them are harmless, only a superficial attack without lasting consequences. For us, however, in the university, where truth is everything, we cannot accept that characterization. It cuts to our core.

So what are to do? Fortunately, there is an experience to guide us in our response and nowhere is that experience more resonant than at Columbia. Precisely 100 years ago in 1919 during the chaotic and repressive post-world war I era. I referenced earlier, a moment of a civil peril laid bare a fight between imagination and ignorance. The fight was fierce and provoked two distinct responses, each of them worthy of special note, celebration, and emulation today.

First, the United States Supreme Court took three cases, including that involving presidential hopeful Eugene Debbs and began interpreting the words Congress shall make no law abridging the freedom of speech or of the press. It took the court and the nation another 50 years to get it right, with the special help of the civil rights and the women’s movement, but finally, we did… finally, we did and when it all came together, the United States had created the greatest shield for freedom of the thought and of expression of any nation history.

谢谢学院和同学们给我这个机会来和即将毕业的14级同学们最后说上几句衷肠话语！在这之前，受到同学们邀请来参加今天的这个晚会，我十分乐意，因为14级的同学是我非常非常喜欢的一届学生，说什么都要来送大家一程的。后来听说要我作为教师代表做一个发言，我便开始忐忑起来。我不敢代表全院的教师同事来这里讲话，就代表自己来简单聊几句吧，至多，还可以代表一下亲爱的 杨老师，呵呵！

我们师生一场走到了今天，说真的，不知道该怎样表达我此时的心情。我想，就从两年前说起吧。当年04级毕业的时候，我和杨老师都参加了同学们的毕业晚会。杨老师和我悄悄地说：“在这以后，可能不一定来参加这种活动了，不过，06级同学毕业的时候，我会很愿意来的。”我和杨老师的想法完全一样，也很明白她这样说的原因，那就是，我们和你们这一级的同学感情最深，相处最融洽！

我想，这种疑虑我没有机会再在你们这些同学的身上来发生了。因为，你们要走了。

同学们，你们要走了，我们作为老师的，既感到高兴，又十分地不舍。大家学有所成，有机会大施拳脚，开天辟地，我们深以你们为荣！但另一方面，你们即将中断几年相处的经历，离开这片青春记忆中最多彩的土地，想到这里，真是让我们又不禁叹息！

The search for truth became its core animating idea and the American Universities flourished over time to institutionalize and idealize that way of life. Also, in 1919, at the more local level, on this campus, the new year-long required course for Columbia freshman has launched call contemporary civilization.

Though today, we know C.C. is the Genesis of the famed curriculum, then it was nothing more than a bold experiment in higher education. The objective reflected in the course name was to apply learning and reason derived from classic texts to the problems facing society in the aftermath of a cataclysmic war. The idea was to double down on the academic mission and it has made a difference as generation after generation has attested to its value in creating an open mind and intellect.

Both of these century-old intellectual innovations arose from the same sensibility. Both assumed that the best side of human nature includes the desire to learn and to live by the truth and to acquire and to create knowledge. And while our natural negative instincts activated by our fears, greed and lust for power sometimes divert us from that quest. A life worth living will only follow from a determined effort to engage with ideas at the most profound levels, even those ideas we dislike and firmly believe to be in error.

This time, your time presents the conundrum this is above all a moment when we must reassert our commitment to open inquiry, to reason and to the sanctity of knowledge and understanding. As was the case a century ago, these pursuits are increasingly out of step with the currents of the broader world, making it all the more essential that we express our devotion to that endeavor.

Graduates, you’re probably asking yourself some big, important questions right now on this important day, like how am I going to make a living? Will I ever have a mattress as nice as the one I had in the Forty? Will I ever again experience the magic of free Uber rides?

And the biggest question of all, after Chancellor Wrighton retires, will he still wear double-breasted suits? I’m going to say yes to that one.

Today, you’ll have to say farewell to many of the things that served as your support system and that got you through these stressful times, like Ted Drewes, toasted ravs, John’s Donuts, gooey butter cake. Thank goodness, WashU has also one of the world’s best medical centers.

Now, before I go any further, let me take a moment to congratulate another group who is here today and does deserve a lot of credit, and I’m talking about your parents and your family. What about a nice round of applause for them?

They’re out there beaming, not even thinking about the cost of tuition, and I’m sure they are just thrilled that some of you will be moving back into their basements.

Wherever you’re headed in the days and months ahead, I want to leave you with some food for thought, so let me turn to the real message of my speech.

But if you looked at my speechwriters, you know why.And the granddaughter of one of my dearest friends in life -— a former Holocaust survivor, a former foreign policy advisor, a former Chairman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, Congressman Tom Lantos -— is graduating today. Mercina, congratulations, kiddo. (Applause.) Where are you? You are the sixth -- she’s the sixth sibling in her immediate family to graduate from Yale. Six out of 11, thats not a bad batting average. (Laughter.) I believe it’s a modern day record for the number of kids who went to Yale from a single family.

And, Mercina, I know that your mom, Little Annette is here. I dont know where you are, Annette. But Annette was part of the first class of freshman women admitted to Yale University. (Applause.)

And her grandmother, Annette, is also a Holocaust survivor, an amazing woman; and both I’m sure wherever they are, beaming today. And I know one more thing, Mercina, your father and grandfather are looking down, cheering you on.

我是一个乐于助人、乖巧文静的女孩。平常喜欢帮老师分担任务。每年都被评为“三好学生”或“优秀班干部”。我非常喜欢阅读和游泳。我博览群书，增加我的视野;我激流勇上，增强我的体质。我每次英语考试成绩都在95分以上。

我不仅英语学习成绩好，而且我做的英文海报和我的英语书写，也是很厉害的!我在业余时间里或假期里，我喜欢看英语报、读英文书、唱英文歌……

我从二年级到五年级，都是英语课代表，所以我有决心和经验来承担英语课代表这个职责。虽然我的口语能力还有待提高，但是我会继续努力的!

如果我当上了英语课代表，我会尽力为老师和同学服务!我会建议和帮助老师多编课本剧，锻炼大家的团队精神和胆量。我们学校的英语节和第二xx届深圳大学生运动会快要来临了，我会听取同学们的意见，举办各种英语课外活动，参加志愿者活动，迎接它们的到来!

I’m very glad to stand here and give you a short speech! To begin with ,I want to pop a question .Does everybody dream a good dream last night? Actually ,Today I want to talk about dream with you. Of course, What I want to talk is not a dream you have last night,but a dream about life.

Every one has dreams about life, different dreams at different life stage,and we need dreams to support us. Dreams are like the stars we never reach in the sky,but like most mariners,we can chart our course by them. With the dream,we have a direction,with a direction, we were no longer confused.With the dream, there is hope,With hope, we have the strength to fight.

Life is tough,and there are always ups and downs, maybe we fail in the way to our aims,and we may feel depressed ,whenever at this time, the dream in our heart can always confort us, encourage us ,and support us to move ahead .

So bear in mind your dream and never give up your dream easily. look into the great people’s experiences, you may find the truth that good dream makes a good one, because there is nothing like a dream to create the future and build up our body .

Finally ,I would suggest. Have a dream in mind and keep pursuing on it. Try to use your time sensibly, do what you should do to make your dream come ture. Although it is a hard job to get to the top of your dreaming mountain, but as the saying says, “mountain’s high, but man makes the peak”. As long as we keep, we will finally fullfill it .

I deeply respect and honor women who choose to work inside the home full-time to care for their families. We never want to discourage that incredible calling, but we must also ensure that every woman has the freedom to work outside of the home – if they so choose.

Therefore, in order to empower women to reach our full economic potential, we must embrace four fundamental changes that will propel us into the future.

First, as leaders in both business and government, we must pave the way in modernizing the workplace.

While the percentage of working women has dramatically increased, corporate expectations have remained all-too stagnant.

Today, in the United States, women now comprise 47 percent of the workforce.

In the vast majority of American homes with children, all parents work – and in 40 percent of households, women are the primary breadwinners.

Yet, work environments and social institutions still largely operate on a single-earner mindset, in which one parent – traditionally the mother – stays at home to provide full time care.

All too often, our workplace culture has failed to treat women with appropriate respect. This takes many forms, including harassment, which can never be tolerated.

Traditional and rigid corporate culture also fails working mothers – and fathers – who work long and often wildly unpredictable hours and get little time off.

Too many mothers dread telling their boss they must stay home to take care of a sick child – and many must go back to work just weeks after having a new baby – because they can’t afford not to.

Every day, working parents are forced to make hard but unavoidable choices.
